Mark Boucher should go down as the worst Proteas coach in the history of South African cricket. Here's why:
His contract ended last week, following South Africa’s shock group stage exit at the T20 World Cup in Australia, where the Proteas were eliminated by minnows the Netherlands.
The exit sent shock waves across the country. It pushed the cricket-mad supporters and the media to the edge.On Wednesday, at a press conference when the Proteas returned home, Boucher was nowhere to be seen.Instead of fronting up, Boucher chose instead to go on a trip to the US under the auspices of what he said was “work”.Director of cricket Enoch Nkwe had no choice but to sit by the captain’s side to give him moral support.
It was disgraceful and unsportsmanlike for a coach not to return home with the rest of the squad after a major international tournament. Yes, his contract expired at the conclusion of the World Cup, when it was announced in September that Boucher would leave his post to start work with one of the SA20 franchise teams. But, as a matter of decency and out of a sense of patriotism, he was still duty-bound to present himself to the media and to his employers for debriefing sessions for the organisation to make sense of what went wrong at the World Cup.
