Araw ng Kagitingan ay pagkakataong kilalanin ang resilience ng modernong Pinoy – na di nalalayo sa nag-Death March noong April 9, 1942. Masakit mang sabihin, may sarili rin tayong Death March ngayon: kanser ng pagkalimot at historical revisionism, slow death ng mga institusyong haligi ng malusog na demokrasya, at opium ng pekeng normalcy.
At napag-uusapan na rin lang ang resilience – kailangan din natin ng tibay ng loob upang umigpaw sa walang katapusang pamamaluktot at pag-tumbling upang tahakin ang landas ng kasaganahan. ‘Yung tunay na kasaganahan, hindi “Bagong Lipunan.” Magka-back-to-back ang Pasko ng Pagkabuhay at Araw ng Kagitingan/Bataan Day. Parehong buhay at kamatayan na may halong pag-asa. Ito ang patuloy na pagbangon natin bilang bansa at muling pagkabuhay sa harap ng walang patid na pagsubok.
Pagkakataon itong magbigay pugay ‘di lang sa mga namatay na bayani kundi pati sa buhay pang mga bayaning patuloy na nakikibaka sa ibat-ibang larangan.Nariyan ang mga mamamahayag na patuloy na ipinaglalaban ang katotohanan sa harap ng walang tigil na mga atake, pananakot, at hampas ng kasinungalingan.
Pero dapat may katapusan ang vicious cycle – dapat may katapusan ang Death March. Sana lang, magbunga na rin ang paulit-ulit na kabayanihang ito.Hindi lamang ang kabayanihan sa harap ng isang Death March. Hindi lang ito kakayahan nating magmartsa, kundi ang kakayahan nating umigpaw sa kumunoy ng kahirapan, korapsiyon, bulok na pulitika, at “bahala na”.
