Howard Bauchner is stepping down as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The editor-in-chief of the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association will step down after the publication received backlash over controversial comments made by another editor on a podcast.
Bauchner said he remained “profoundly disappointed in myself for the lapses” that led to the JAMA Network putting out a podcast episode and tweet featuring comments that dismissed the existence of structural racism within the health care system. “I share and have always supported the AMA’s commitment to dismantling structural racism in the institutions of American medicine, as evident by numerous publications in JAMA on this issue and related subjects, and look forward to personally contributing to that work going forward,” he added.
“‘Structural racism’ is an unfortunate term,” Livingston said. “Personally, I think taking racism out of the conversation will help. Many people like myself are offended by the implication that we are somehow racist.”
