The leader of Edgewood Independent School District pledged $6,000 of his own money to fund a new scholarship in his name — the Dr. Eduardo Hernández Complete the Dream Scholarship. The valedictorian and salutatorian at the district's three high schools will each get $1,000 to help cover living expenses in college, the district announced at a board of trustees meeting last week. Hernández said the idea for the scholarship comes from his own higher education experience.
It revealed he could make up to $335,000, which is $43,000 more than trustees discussed at the September meeting. Michael Valdez, the only trustee to vote against the new contract in September, told the San Antonio Express-News at the time that the scholarship was one of his reasons for voting no — he believed that the district would pay for the scholarship through the superintendent's contract.
