The company also is adding a new CFO to push its growth plan, despite other similar companies struggling.Eden Green Technology, a company that grows lettuce for Walmart stores in indoor greenhouses in Cleburne, is embarking on a $40 million expansion that will boost its production to nearly six million pounds of leafy greens a year.
The company’s plans include building 20 new greenhouses across the country within the next five years. As it expands outside Texas, Eden Green will seek sites near distribution centers to reduce transportation costs and maintain freshness by delivering produce to stores within 48 hours.Badrina said the company will look at expanding in the Midwest, Northeast or Southeast. He said around 90% of leafy greens and herbs nationwide are now grown in Yuma, Ariz., or Salinas Valley, Calif.
Badrina attributes Eden Green’s success to the fact the company combines the strengths of both conventional greenhouses and vertical indoor farms. The company uses 95% less electricity than other indoor vertical farms, saving on electricity costs, he said. Other companies that use flat-tray greenhouses and rely on sunlight only grow on one level that’s about three feet high, which leaves 18 feet of wasted vertical space, Badrina said.
