'No Butter in Hell - a Tribute to the Life \u0026 Times of Eddy Detroit' salutes a Phoenix bongo-playing outsider-art legend who opened for Meat Puppets.

Eddy Detroit was a bongo-playing outsider-art legend who launched his recording career, such as it was, with 1982's"Immortal God's," a willfully eccentric masterstroke of exotica-tinged freak folk, within a year of his arrival on the Phoenix underground., longtime friend and frequent bandmate Alan Bishop of avant-garde rock legends Sun City Girls told The Arizona Republic,"Eddy was his own scene.

The second half of the collection is a trove of 15 recently unearthed and previously unreleased recordings of Detroit himself, captured between 1997 and 2004 on VHS tape by Bob Judd. How Eddy Detroit became ingrained in the Phoenix punk scene It’s Pistrui’s understanding that Detroit approached the young promoter who booked shows there, Tony Victor of Placebo Records, and asked if he could play between the bands.

A talented percussionist whose aesthetic was heavily influenced by Martin Denny and '60s exotica, Detroit was known to join Sun City Girls on stage and in the studio. “I had seen him as a young guy and always thought that he was super cool, but I didn't really know him,” Pistrui says.“We were doing these acoustic shows with Eddy, and eventually he started sitting in with us to the point where Eddy knew our songs so well, he didn't have to practice,” Pistrui says. “If he was there, he could play. So he became part of our family. He was just the sweetest, nicest guy, but also an incredible percussionist.

Crawford, who launched a cable-access TV show called “Bohemia AfterDark” to document the Phoenix punk scene in the early ‘80s, says he’d seen Detroit perform back in the day but hadn’t really given him much thought until the taping of that episode.
