isn’t that far out of her usual wheelhouse. “Even before I was doing the show, I realised that I play multiple characters in my stand-up,” she explains. It’s true. Izzard has an uncanny ability to conjure up characters in the blink of an eye, her streams of consciousness engaging and electrifying. In one celebrated scene, she flips effortlessly between Darth Vader ordering lunch in the Death Star Canteen and the dinner lady who insists he needs a tray.
The extreme right, Izzard continues, “are always trying to start wars where there aren’t any. I’m not having a war – I’m just existing. So they will use fear and hatred, whenever they can, to stoke it up, stoke it up, stoke it up. Who are these people? There are now 8 billion people in the world and most of us are ‘live and let live’”. She pauses. “But we must fear the right wing because they will constantly try and separate us out and conquer by dividing. They just want to remain in power.
A life-long Europhile who has performed stand-up in French, German and Spanish, Izzard is equally passionate about Europe and is exasperated by the continuing, cataclysmic damage wrought by Brexit. “I was always very positive on Europe. You can’t make each British family better off if you also make it harder for us to trade with our main trading partner. Europe is our continent.
