Ed Sheeran is speaking out after police in India pulled the plug on his pop-up performance on Sunday because they said he had not received permission.
Ed Sheeran arrives at the 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, in Los Angeles. The four-time Grammy winner was in between shows in the southern city of Bangalore when he decided to do some busking for fans and spectators on Church Street.
A fan who caught the interaction shared a video to social media. Sheeran had a simple setup of a stand mic and an acoustic guitar. Midway through his performance of “Shape of You,” a policeman in a khaki uniform approached him and unplugged the microphone without warning. The video shows a few bystanders attempting to intervene, however the police officer was insistent and Sheeran ended his performance.
Local police told CNN on Monday that they had previously denied Sheeran permission to busk in the busy area. “We rejected it because Church Street is a very busy area and we try to keep the people moving there,” Shekhar H. Tekkannavar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru Central division,“We had permission to busk,” Sheeran wrote on his Instagram story shortly after the incident. “...It wasn’t just us randomly turning up.”The singer was scheduled to perform in Bengaluru both Saturday and Sunday for the international leg of his Mathematics Tour.
