Today marks one year until a total solar eclipse will occur in Cleveland.
Read what cleveland.com’s Peter Krouse wrote about the importance of knowing when to wear the glasses:
“Protective glasses need to be worn the entire time of the partial eclipse, said Chris Hartenstine, public engagement lead at the NASA Glenn Research Center. During the period of totality, you can safely remove your glasses. In many organized viewing places, there will likely be audio signals or somebody saying when it is safe to remove your glasses or when to put them back on.
The moment before totality, which is when the disk of the moon completely covers the sun, there will be a phenomenon called the diamond ring, which is caused by the last shimmer of light passing through the valleys on the moon. After you no longer see the diamond ring it will be safe to remove protective glasses, Hartenstine said.
