San Antonio's stretch of Walzem Road east of Interstate 35 on the Northeast Side is filled with soul food, a meat market, an Asian market and Mexican restaurants including the iconic Pollos Asados Los Norteños.
Chuck Blount/StaffThe stretch of Walzem Road east of Interstate 35 on the Northeast Side can feel like a giant concrete parking lot with lots of traffic and enough red lights to adorn a Christmas tree. But there is a lot going on here, especially with your food options, that make it a place worth visiting.
They serve it all cafeteria style, where you can get popular favorites like smothered pork chops, oxtail, fried fish, fried chicken, ribs, meatloaf and other meats that will make your belly happy. You start with the meats, then move on to the side with trays of yams, mac and cheese, greens, mashed potatoes and everything else you can think of.
I have sent dozens of people to this restaurant and every single one has said that it ranks among the best chicken they have ever had. Now they do have other options, like hamburgers and beef fajitas, but the reason to come here is for the chicken plate. You can get a whole or half chicken, marinated in a special blend of chile paste that gives it the signature red coloring, served with rice, fresh corn tortillas, lime and a grilled onion. It also comes with a green and red sauce.
