With initiation having been banned for the past three seasons , thousands of boys are expected to take advantage of this long summer season as a result of the backlog that was created by the suspension of the practice due to Covid-19 regulations. Therefore, all boys, together with iingcibi [traditional surgeons] and amakhankatha [traditional nurses], will be subjected to Covid-19 screening and testing regardless of their vaccination status,” said Mavuso. In July, City Press reported that illegal initiation schools mushroomed all over the Eastern Cape after the country moved to alert level 4, which effectively suspended the cultural practice.
In Buffalo City, a parent and a traditional surgeon were arrested in July for conducting illegal initiations after the announcement that the country would go back to alert level 4.Mavuso said the provincial initiation task team had met over two days in OR Tambo to evaluate the state of readiness for the season, and was hopeful that everything would run smoothly this time around.
“I am refreshed by the amount of good work done by our teams across the province towards the summer season.” He said:
