Residents in the East Village Community are frustrated with the sidewalks in their area saying they are so bad, they've stopped walking on them completely.
Richard Lafoille, 86, who has a prosthetic leg, said he's fallen over multiple times because of the poor sidewalk conditions.SAN ANTONIO — Richard Lafoille misses the days when he could walk around the East Village neighborhood without fear of falling down due to cracked or uneven sidewalks.
Lafoille said he’s seen little movement from the City of San Antonio to address the community’s concerns beyond officials visiting the neighborhood.Lafoille is primarily worried about the safety and wellbeing of neighbors, many of whom are older adults and have physical ailments.“Every time I have this leg on and the Packers are playing, they win,” Lafoille said. “I wasn’t watching where I was going I guess and I hit one of those curbs and over I went and flat on my butt.
“Just walking down the sidewalk, you can’t just look around at the homes or enjoy the view, you have to look down to make sure you’re not going to trip,” Bueno said. “I saw an 84-year-old lady fall about 15 years ago and all she wanted to do was make sure her kids got home safe from school, her grandkids.”
“Sidewalk work is planned for this Spring on Castle Path Drive, and we have a few more streets scheduled for 2025-2026. Four near-term street maintenance projects in this neighborhood will also include sidewalk improvements,” said Public Works representative Nicholas Olivier.
