In just his second high school season, East's Katahdin Staples has accomplished something no Thunderbird could in decades.
East Anchorage’s Katahdin Staples earned the victory at the Division I state cross-country championships on Saturday, becoming the first Thunderbird since Clary in 1974 to accomplish the feat.
Placing in the top three in every race this season, Staples said the butterflies were flying after winning at the region meet a week earlier. Staples was also quick to thank his competition as well as his teammates and family that supported him; many wore custom t-shirts rocking what’s becoming his signature fist pump celebration.
