About 14,500 people live downtown, a population that has grown by 71% in the past 10 years, according to Downtown Dallas Inc.
Todd Interests is one of the key players in this transformation. The Dallas-based developer is investing some $460 million in the East Quarter redevelopment.A second influencer is Spectrum Properties, which has led the reinvention of the Dallas Farmers Market. The market was built in 1941 and has found new life in the 21st century thanks to Spectrum and an array of vendors and business owners, such as India Hearne.
“Nowadays with development, they’ll take something special that’s been there forever, mow it down and just build, build, build,” said Hearne. India Hearne, owner of Whiski Designs, hand draws her designs and sells them at her shop in downtown Dallas on June 17, 2023. Hearne began her business as a vendor at the Dallas Farmers Market and moved into her shop in East Quarter.She started her business at The Shed, where vendors set up shop every Saturday and Sunday at the Farmers Market.
“I’m so grateful that they kept The Shed, because that’s what makes a farmers market a farmer’s market,” she said.Preservation of history is common throughout the east side of downtown. Walking through the streets of East Quarter, it is not uncommon to see buildings with climbing ivy and large window spaces constructed of terra cotta brick, a reminder of the district’s storied past.
“My friend’s like, ‘Billy, you need to start building equity,’” Stevenson said about how his friends urged him to buy a home outside of downtown. “If you’re not paying your mortgage, you’re paying someone else’s. I’m like, OK, but I’m sitting on my couch and this is what I see outside. My rent is less than $2,000 for this view and location.
