Earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria Monday morning, killing thousands of people as of Monday evening local time

The first quake was 7.8 magnitude and struck southern Turkey near the Syrian border at 4:17 a.m. This was followed by a 7.5-magnitude quake, and a series of aftershocks. More than 8,000 people have been injured and over 2,800 buildings collapsed, according to Turkey’s emergency service.
