Hundreds of earthquakes near Santorini, Greece, have prompted authorities to take emergency measures. Schools are closed, rescue teams are deployed, and residents are advised to take precautions.

An earthquake swarm in the Aegean Sea, near the popular holiday island of Santorini, Greece , has prompted authorities to take emergency measures. Hundreds of earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 3 to 4.9, have been recorded between Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos since Saturday. Greek authorities have dispatched rescue teams with tents, sniffer dogs, and drones to the area. Schools have also been closed on four islands as a precautionary measure.

Authorities are urging residents and tourists to avoid indoor gatherings, check escape routes, stay away from cliffs, and drain swimming pools to minimize potential structural damage in case of a larger earthquake. While Greece is frequently hit by earthquakes, the vast majority cause little or no damage. However, the country has also experienced devastating quakes in the past. The current seismic activity began on January 24th but intensified on Saturday with an increasing frequency and magnitude. Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos explained on Greek television that the fault line responsible for the earthquakes stretches for about 120 kilometers (75 miles), but only the southern section between Santorini and Amorgos is currently active. The epicenters of the quakes are located beneath the seabed, roughly 30-40 kilometers (18-25 miles) from any of the islands. Scientists say this is a positive sign as an epicenter located on land could potentially be more destructive. Santorini, famous for its picturesque whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches perched on cliffs overlooking the caldera, is one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations. Last week, scientists observed increased volcanic activity in the caldera, but authorities have stated that this is not connected to the earthquakes
