A seismologist says the earthquake occurred at a fairly shallow position in the earth's crust and was too small to cause any damage.
Geoscience Australia data shows the tremor occurred about 8.02pm on Tuesday with an epicentre about 10 kilometres below a national park, just north of the town.
Dr Griffin said a magnitude 2.1 earthquake was too small to cause any damage, but people would have noticed "rattling things on a shelf". "This has occurred quite close to town and 60 felt reports is a good number of felt reports for an earthquake of this magnitude, which suggests it might be shallower than we're reporting," he said.
