Candidates for 2 appraisal district seats came up short of a majority in May. They're now fighting it out in a runoff.

Voters started casting ballots Monday to decide who will fill the last two at-large seats on the Bexar Appraisal board of directors. Early voting for the runoff runs through June 11. Election day is June 15.

This year marks the first time candidates are elected to the Bexar Appraisal District's board. Voters in November approved an amendment to the Texas constitution setting up elections for at-large appraisal district seats in the state's largest counties. Three of the local board’s seats will be filled by election, while taxing entities within the district will appoint members to the other five seats. The two appraisal board seats are the only races on this month's ballot. In May, Naomi Elizabeth Miller won the Place 1 seat. Miller is executive director of the American Council of Engineering Companies of San Antonio. From 2018 to 2022, she was the director of governmental relations for the Northside Independent School District. Prior to that, she spent nearly a decade as district director to then-Texas House Speaker Joe Straus. She had the support of the conservative True Texas Project and Bexar County Republican Party Chairman Jeff McManus. Erika Hizel and Stephen Spears are vying for the Place 2 seat in this month's runoff. Hizel owns Kimeaux Investments, a real estate investment firm. She is co-founder and president of San Antonio Property Owners Alliance, which says it advocates for “mom and pop,” or small-scale, landlords. North East Bexar County Democrats endorsed Hizel. Spears is a Realtor at Stonepoint Properties Inc. READ MORE: Bexar County Commissioner, a Black Latina, accuses opponent, union of ‘racist’ hate campaign Robert Bruce and G.L. 'Larry' Lamborn are facing off for Place 3. Bruce founded United Audio Recording Productions and Boerne Stage Airfield, and is co-owner of Astro Super Bowl bowling alley. He also has the support of the local Republican party chairman. Lamborn is a retired U.S. Army Reserve colonel and retired CIA senior operations officer who is endorsed by the North East Bexar County Democrats. Voters can cast ballots at 41 early voting locations across the county, including the Bexar County Elections Department office on South Frio. A full list of voting locations is on the Bexar County Elections Department website.
