SAN ANTONIO - Despite being early in the Atlantic hurricane season, we're on the verge of seeing our second tropical system of the season and quite possibly before we reach July. And yes, for this forecaster, I believe this foreshadows what August through October could hold as far as activity in the tropical Atlantic especially once we clear Saharan dust season later in July.
Invest 95L is way out in the east Atlantic several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands. The tropical wave is showing signs of organization and now has a 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm within two days. The chance over the next 7 days is a high 80% chance. While a massive elongated plume of Saharan dust stretches across the Atlantic, area of low pressure developing on this tropical wave sits just below the main axis of dust. Saharan dust is warm, dry desert air with grains of sand and dust which can choke off a tropical system or seriously disrupt development. It should maintain this the next few days as it moves west over warmer than normal sea surface temperatures of the Atlantic.
It seems likely we'll see Beryl into the Caribbean and it's possible we could see Beryl strengthen to a hurricane. Interests across the Caribbean should be plugged into this system for the first week of July. Questions really expand with lowering confidence in the long term on this system.
As for Texas and the gulf, if it could even make it to the gulf, it would most likely be after 4th of July. It's simply way too soon to speculate whether it would even move into the gulf but if you have interests anywhere in the gulf after the 4th, stay plugged into this forecast.
