The Eagles signed offensive lineman Fred Johnson to a two-year deal Thursday.
The Eagles announced Thursday that they had signed tackle Fred Johnson to a two-year deal. Johnson, 26, has been playing well as a backup left tackle a year after he spent last season on the practice squad. Johnson broke into the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 and made stops with the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before coming to Philadelphia.
The addition of Johnson indicates he will be on the 53-man roster and fill in the role that Andre Dillard played last year as the backup for. However, Dillard signed a three-year, $29 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, leaving a void at the backup spot. Johnson will use his 6-foot, 7-inch, 327-pound frame to block on the outside and continue to use the footwork that has made him a standout in camp., Sua Opeta, and Tyrese Robinson.
Opeta can play left and right guard and is a better run blocker than a pass blocker. Robinson has improved after spending last year on the practice squad and has also played both guard positions. However, Opeta is more experienced, starting in four games in his career.
