Philadelphia Eagles starting offensive tackle Mekhi Becton is doubtful to return after suffering a knee injury during the Super Bowl LIX. During the second quarter, Becton was seen in pain while participating in drills on the sideline. The Eagles were leading the Kansas City Chiefs 17-0 at the time. Becton was evaluated in the blue medical tent after the injury occurred. Tyler Steen has replaced Becton at right guard.
Becton, 25, is in his first year with the Eagles after signing a one-year deal in April 2024. This is his fifth year in the NFL, having been selected in the first round with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. This isn't Becton's first encounter with injuries. In 2021, he suffered a knee injury that led to him being carted off the field at the start of the season. He underwent surgery for cartilage damage, keeping him sidelined for 4-6 weeks. He was placed on injured reserve on September 14, 2021. The following year, he was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture in his right kneecap, again resulting in a placement on injured reserve and causing him to miss the entire 2022 season. In 2023, he was healthy but struggled during his last season with the New York Jets. Earlier this week, Becton compared the Eagles and Jets, stating, 'I would say that they're very confident. I would say that the Philly organization is very confident, they know what they're about to do, they know what they're gonna do, and they're gonna go do it.' Becton's time with the Jets was marked by off-field drama, but he chose to focus on the positive. Injuries have been a recurring challenge for the 25-year-old, contributing to his struggles with the Jets. According to PFF, Becton has an overall grade of 75.2, ranked 21st, a 63.6 pass-blocking grade, ranked 60th, and a 74.7 run-blocking grade. In 2024, he played in 903 offensive snaps, committed only four penalties, and allowed three sacks.
