(AP Photo/Matt Patterson)There will be a lot riding for the Philadelphia Eagles when they welcome the Dallas Cowboys to the Linc for what is now a 1 p.m. ET game on Sunday, Dec. 29.
What was originally a late-afternoon encounter between the two NFC East rivals has been moved to a first-of-the-afternoon spot now that the Cowboys have been eliminated from the playoffs and the Eagles have only a small chance of earning the conference‘s No. 1 seed. The Eagles (12-3) can clinch the NFC East title with a home win over the Cowboys on Sunday. But they have some issues to overcome. One is the status of quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was concussed last weekend in the loss at Washington that ended the team’s winning streak at 10 games. It appears he won’t play after sitting out of practice all week, meaning that backup Kenny Pickett will get the start. Hurts hasn’t missed a start since late in the 2022 season. Pickett, picked in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, started 24 games for them before getting benched down the stretch in 2023. The other is the defense, which had been playing so well since the Week 4 bye until it collapsed against the Redskins, yielding 36 points, 368 yards, five TD passes, and 22 points in the fourth quarter. That unit allowed more points in the final 13 1/2 minutes of the game than it had allowed in any game since before the bye, getting torched for scoring drives of 61, 87 and 57 yards. As for Dallas (7-8), it will be looking to play spoiler in Philadelphia. Hurts threw two touchdowns and ran for two more in the Eagles’ 34-6 rout of the Cowboys at Dallas last month. Leading the Cowboys will be Harrisburg native Micah Parsons, who is playing as well as any defensive player in the league for a team that has won four of its last five games in an otherwise lost seaso
