The Eagles played the Denver Broncos Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley scores on a 47-yard TD pass in the third quarter. The Eagles went up 17-3 on the play, but lost 21-17 to the Denver Broncos. Up 17-3 and seemingly in control, they fell apart in the final quarter Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field and were left to deal with just their second loss since Week 4 of last season.

Quarterback Bo Nix, who looked pedestrian through Denver’s first eight possessions of the game, led the Broncos to 18 straight points and a shocking 21-18 victory. The Eagles, with just their second loss in 22 games, fell to 4-1. It was their first loss at home since Week 2 of last season and their first loss at all since Dec. 22 of last season at Washington.Nix led the Broncos on a 10-play, 64-yard touchdown drive that started late in the third quarter and extended into the fourth quarter to close the Eagles’ lead to 17-10. The Denver quarterback had been 12-for-25 for 64 yards before that drive, but completed four of his five passes on the scoring drive. The Broncos also punished the Eagles in the running game, with J.K. Dobbins running four times for 25 yards, including a two-yard touchdown. The Eagles went three-and-out with the series ending on a sack of Hurts. The Broncos got the ball back at their own 28. Nix then led a six-play, 72-yard drive against an Eagles defense that had been dominant for most of the day. Nix started the drive with an 18-yard completion to tight end Evan Engram and finished it with an 11-yard touchdown to Engram. The second-year quarterback was 4-for-4 for 54 yards on the drive. A daring decision by Broncos coach Sean Payton led to a two-point conversion completion from Nix to Troy Franklin, who beat cornerback Kelee Ringo on an out route to give Denver an 18-17 lead. It appeared as if the Eagles were going to get the ball back with plenty of time remaining when Andrew Mukuba came up with a third-down stop on a short pass to RJ Harvey that would have forced a fourth down. Instead, Zack Baun was flagged for a late hit, allowing the Broncos to take the clock down to 1:14 before they kicked a field goal that put them up 21-17. The Eagles managed to get the ball from their own 26 to the Denver 29-yard line, but Hurts’ Hail Mary at the buzzer was knocked down. The Eagles had 260 yards of offense through the first three quarters. At that point, Hurts was 18-for-29 for 231 yards, including a 52-yard throw to DeVonta Smith and a 47-yard touchdown to Saquon Barkley. But when the Broncos’ offense came to life, the Eagles’ offense stalled. The Eagles went three-and-out on three of their final four possessions and had minus-20 yards on the three-and-out possessions. Hurts, who finished 23-for-38 for 280 yards, was sacked six times by the Broncos, who lead the NFL in that department.Barkley pushed the Eagles’ lead to 17-3 early in the third quarter when he ran past linebacker Alex Singleton on a wheel route and caught a pass that turned into a 47-yard touchdown. It was his longest play of the year. Barkley, however, finished the game with six carries for 30 yards and had one carry for zero yards in the second half. He has yet to go over 100 yards from scrimmage this season. A year ago, he had more than 100 yards from scrimmage in four of the Eagles’ first five games.dressed for the first time as an Eagle and had an immediate positive impact. After the Broncos picked up a fourth-and-3 first down with the help of an offsides penalty onhit Nix’s arm as he was throwing the football. The call, however, was reversed on replay and the Broncos got on the scoreboard first with a 55-yard field from Wil Lutz. It was the sixth field goal of more than 50 yards against the Eagles this season. Ojulari flashed again on a third-and-8 play in the second quarter when he hit Nix as he was throwing the football to force an incompletion and a punt. The Eagles were 11-for-11 at scoring touchdowns inside the red zone through the first four games, but that streak ended on their second possession against the Broncos, who entered the game with the best red-zone defense. After picking up a first down on an 11-yard pass play from Hurts to Grant Calcaterra, things went downhill for the Eagles. First banged-up left guardThree plays later, the Eagles were celebrating a touchdown. Hurts made a perfect throw to Smith, who had slipped behind cornerback Riley Moss. The result was a 52-yard gain to the Denver 26.on the next play and Broncos All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain was flagged for pass interference at the 2-yard line. Hurts finished the drive with a 2-yard TD pass to tight end Dallas Goedert on a quick out.became the Eagles’ first edge rusher to register a full sack this season when ran an inside stunt and took down Nix for a 13-yard loss on a third-and-eight play. The 70th sack of Smith’s career pushed the Broncos out of a field goal range and forced a punt. The 33-year-old pass rusher went into an Army crawl reminiscent ofBaun didn’t get credit for a sack in the third quarter, but he made a play every big as Smith’s first-half sack. After the Eagles scored to go up by 14 points, the Broncos drove from their own 18 to the Philadelphia 35-yard line. Again they had at least three points in sight, but that opportunity disappeared when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio sent Zack Baun on a blitz. Feeling the pressure, Nix threw the ball away and was flagged for intentional grounding, resulting in a 13-yard Denver loss. For the second time in the game the Broncos were taken out of field-goal range by third-down pressure from the Eagles. Josh Uche and Ojulari were also closing in on Nix when he threw the ball away.
