An outbreak of E.coli is sweeping through the UK, and eating any contaminated food could lead to some pretty unpleasant and potentially even dangerous side effects.

People in the UK have been placed under alert as an outbreak of E.coli is sweeping the nation, with the government issuing some stark advice on how to keep safe.

The UK Health Security Agency is working with Public Health Scotland and other agencies in Northern Ireland and Wales in order to keep an eye on a recent spike of cases across the UK. Cases range in age from 2 years old to 79 years old, with the majority of cases in young adults. The number of cases is expected to rise as further samples undergo testing.

It can be caught through eating contaminated food, touching infected animals, or contact with people who have the illness - especially if you do not wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet or before handling food.
