Firefighters spent hours extinguishing flames on East 180th and Grand Concourse. Seven people were injured — five firefighters, one EMS worker and one civilian.
While they’re thankful no one was killed, the neighborhood lost businesses and jobs, and the city spent tons of taxpayer money to put this out.Although fire crews responded in less than four minutes—the ion lithium battery shot out searing flames so quickly, igniting the old, aged lumber, it had already spread out of their control.
As crew worked for hours, E bikes surrounded the area, the demand for speedy food deliveries driving up the number of batteries in the city— as well as the number of destructive, deadly fires too. One a bike rider said, that he watches the battery charge and then removes the charger from the wall, but he’s still afraid of fires rom black market and after market batteries.
