The lithium-ion battery exploded in a room at the Mad Monkey hostel in Potts Point, injuring one man and forcing the evacuation of dozens of backpackers.
Two Sydney backpackers have had the fright of their lives after narrowly escaping a fireball caused by a suspected faulty e-bike battery in Sydney’s inner city on Wednesday morning.
An investigation into how the fire began is now underway, however crews believe it was sparked by a faulty e-bike lithium-ion battery, which was left on charge.EV FireSafe chief executive Emma Sutcliffe said the incident may have been caused by toxic flammable gases coming from a damaged lithium-ion battery, and might have followed “a loud popping noise like a gunshot”.
“In the first six months of this year, we stopped counting at 500 battery fires in electric bikes and scooters,” Sutcliffe said.
