published Tuesday, as sales of the small electric vehicles skyrocket amid efforts to cut pollution and slash the number of cars on the road.The number of injuries from electric bike s has doubled every year from 751 in 2017 to 23,493 in 2022, according to the peer reviewed paper published by University of California, San Francisco, researchers in the medical journal JAMA Network Open.

The findings, which the researchers said are the first investigation into recent injury patterns from small electric vehicles in the U.S., come from an analysis of emergency department data collected by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which included factors like the rider’s age, the type of injury, whether or not they wore a helmet and if they were intoxicated.
