Dyson enters the robot vacuum and mop market with the Spot+Scrub AI. It features powerful suction, a self-emptying dock, and AI-powered stain detection, but falls short in navigation and furniture recognition compared to top rivals.
Dyson has launched its first robot vacuum and mop combo, the Spot+Scrub AI, aiming to compete with established players like Roborock and Narwal. The device addresses previous shortcomings of Dyson's 360 Vis Nav by adding mopping capabilities and a self-emptying dock, making it more functional and easier to maintain.
The dock features three containers: one for dirt and debris, and separate tanks for clean and dirty water. The dirt container is transparent and easy to empty via a bottom-release switch, though some users may prefer concealed storage. The self-emptying function operates on a schedule set through the Dyson app, reducing hands-on maintenance compared to bag-based systems. The Spot+Scrub AI boasts 18,000 Pa suction power and a single brush with tough bristles.
It effectively handled pet hair and debris from five dogs without tangling, though it lacks extendable side brushes, making it less efficient at cleaning baseboards and corners compared to competitors like the Saros 10R. The mopping function includes a self-cleaning pad and a water dispenser on the dock. It can detect carpeted versus hard surfaces to lift the mop and avoid wetting fabrics.
Using AI and an on-device camera, it identifies stains and focuses scrubbing efforts on those spots, though it struggled with some dried syrup residues. Physically, the robot stands at 4.25 inches tall, nearly two inches taller than many rivals, potentially limiting access to low-clearance furniture. While it mapped a 169-square-foot area in about ten minutes-comparable to peers-the software still lags. During testing, the robot got stuck under a floor lamp, an issue other models avoid with better navigation.
The Dyson app allows setting no-go zones but lacks object recognition to map furniture automatically, requiring manual adjustments to avoid incomplete cleaning. Mapping data stays on-device for privacy. Overall, the Spot+Scrub AI shows promise with strong hardware and core cleaning abilities, but its navigation and app intelligence need refinement to fully match competitors
