The support has been doubled this year

The Department for Work and Pensions has started sending letters out to people eligible for a winter fuel payment worth up to £600. Normally worth up to £300, the Government has doubled the payment this year to help pensioners with the cost of living.

The DWP says that those who are automatically eligible will receive a letter in October or November. Money should then start landing in bank accounts during November or December, the Mirror reports. Last year saw over 11.4 million payments being made, including to 36,000 people living abroad. People need to have been born before September 25, 1957, to get the payment.

The majority of households who receive the following benefits will get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically: You may need to apply if you don't receive these benefits, you've deferred your state pension, or you live abroad.
