The DWP has set out plans for a major shake-up of the current system in its Modernising Support for Independent Living: The Health and Disability Green Paper

The Department for work and pensions is proposing eight different payment methods to claimants of PIP in a move towards redoing the system, which may result in replacing direct cash transfers with vouchers.

Approximately 3.5 million individuals are recipients of PIP, with 2.6 million of them being working-aged. Each month, according to the DWP, they accept 33,000 new PIP requests, a number far exceeding double the rate before the onset of the pandemic. When it comes to PIP payment combinations, although awards are calculated weekly, they are paid every four weeks. This means in months with five weeks, recipients could see one PIP payment at the start and another at the end of the same month.1. If you're entitled to the standard daily living component only, the weekly payment rate is £72.65, equating to a monthly sum of £290.60 and an annual total of £3,777.80.

4. Lastly, if you qualify for the enhanced mobility component, the weekly rate is £75.75, resulting in a monthly payment of £303. The Department for Work and Pensions commented on the changes, stating: "The UK has used a fixed cash transfer system since the 1970s but there are a number of international systems that look at the specific extra costs people have and provide more tailored support instead. For example, in New Zealand, the amount of Disability Allowance is based on a person's extra costs which are verified by a health practitioner.
