The beloved action-comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, is coming to Max on February 11th.
One of the most celebrated comedic duos of the past decade has been Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart . While the pair is widely recognized for their contributions to the recent Jumanji films, which have garnered critical acclaim in their own right, there exists an often-overlooked 2016 action-comedy starring Johnson and Hart that showcases some of their finest work. This gem is Central Intelligence , directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Now, this comedic masterpiece has found a new streaming home.
Both the theatrical PG-13 cut and the Extended Edition of Central Intelligence will be available for viewing on Max on February 11. It's the perfect comedic remedy heading into Valentine's Day if you're looking for a touch of heartwarming bromance. When the film first premiered, Central Intelligence was a resounding box office triumph. The action-comedy generated over $216 million worldwide on a budget of $50 million. This success coincided with the peak of Johnson and Hart's stardom, but the film's positive word-of-mouth also played a significant role. Central Intelligence currently boasts a commendable 71% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among the actors' best-reviewed films. Furthermore, in addition to Johnson and Hart, this action-packed adventure boasted a stellar ensemble cast that included Amy Ryan (The Office), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).Central Intelligence follows the story of Bob Stone (Johnson), who bravely attends his high school reunion despite years of bullying due to his weight. However, he's now transformed into a fit and formidable individual. Bob soon reconnects with a former classmate named Calvin Joyner (Hart). Bob needs Calvin's assistance, as Calvin is now an accountant, because Bob is secretly a part of the CIA. Together, they must embark on a mission to save an ultra-top-secret satellite that has been compromised. Calvin is hesitant at first, but Bob leaves him with no choice in the matter. What ensues is a hilarious buddy comedy filled with high-stakes action. While Central Intelligence features a laugh-out-loud script and exciting set pieces, it's the effortless rapport between Johnson and Hart that truly sets the film apart from other action comedies of its time. In particular, this film provides a fantastic showcase for Johnson's comedic talent. The actor has a substantial number of comedies on his resume. Yet, at the time, he hadn't embraced such a goofy premise with the same lightness and ease in his performance. While he's played more straight-man characters in films like The Tooth Fairy, Central Intelligence allowed Johnson to fully unleash his fearless funny bone. Central Intelligence will be available to stream on Max on February 11, 2025
