Pruning and shearing is chalked up as a necessary evil, but it is possible to avoid the most laborious pruning tasks by reconsidering right plant, right place. One course of action is to consider dwarf or compact shrubs and trees that require little to no trimming. They are smaller, slower-growing versions of their standard counterpartsu but are not necessarily small. Dwarf varieties can grow up to 6 feet tall, so check the label for mature size to ensure the right fit.

They are found in nurseries and garden centers alongside the standards.Sun-loving Vitex agnus-castus, or chaste tree, grows 10-20 feet high and wide. Its impressive purple blooms and drought tolerance makes it a great small, deciduous tree specimen. Some pruning is required to keep it cleaned up as a tree form.
