What makes a landscape high maintenance? The saying “right plant, right place” is the grown-up version of the matching game. Does the plant match the site’s light, soil, water and space requirements? If one of those components is off, maintenance increases.

All too often, plants grow too large for the space provided. Pruning and shearing is chalked up as a necessary evil, but it is possible to avoid the most laborious pruning tasks by reconsidering right plant, right place. One course of action is to consider dwarf or compact shrubs and trees that require little to no trimming. They are smaller, slower-growing versions of their standard counterpartsu but are not necessarily small. Dwarf varieties can grow up to 6 feet tall, so check the label for mature size to ensure the right fit.

Dwarf varieties are used as foundation and specimen plantings, edging plants, as ground cover and in containers. They are found in nurseries and garden centers alongside the standards.Sun-loving Vitex agnus-castus, or chaste tree, grows 10-20 feet high and wide. Its impressive purple blooms and drought tolerance makes it a great small, deciduous tree specimen. Some pruning is required to keep it cleaned up as a tree form. Flip Side tops out at 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to10 feet wide.
