In extreme cases motorists could be taken to court

Motorists have been told "don't forget" in a fresh warning from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency .

The DVLA is the Government department that issues driving licences and monitors all drivers. All registered owners in the UK have a responsibility to make sure their vehicle tax is up to date, though some exemptions apply. If your vehicle is being taken off the road for a while, for example if you want to keep it in a garage for an extended period, you can declare this by making a Statutory Off Road Notification .READ MORE: Met Office delivers weather verdict on 35C 'Saharan plume'In a new post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, DVLA said: "Has your vehicle been declared off-road for a while? Don’t forget, if you want to use it on the road again, tax it before you do.

Motorists who do not tax their vehicle can be hit with huge fines, taken to court, and can even have their vehicles clamped or impounded. DVLA says less than 2% of vehicles are not correctly taxed.
