If we’re witnessing a travesty, to whom would that travesty belong if not Dutton’s own colleagues who oversaw how money was spent on Indigenous Australians for nine long years?
Well, I didn’t expect audits. I can honestly say there’s almost nothing about the Voice referendum that has surprised me: the fact Yes is in a losing position, the torrents of scurrilous arguments and misinformation on social media, or that it has now descended into a culture war in which so many politicians and pundits play predetermined roles. But the Coalition pledging to launch an audit of government spending on Indigenous Australians? Clearly, I lack the imagination for politics.
Is the Coalition ultimately happy with the status quo? Not officially, given its repeated acceptance that our Closing the Gap figures are unacceptable. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s obliged to support a Yes vote – it’s possible to want change but believe the Voice isn’t the right version of it. But if Peter Dutton and Co want to walk this line, if they want to attack the Voice and the status quo at the same time, they owe us an alternative. And here, things get somewhat murky.
First, it has long supported the idea of a Voice, provided it is in legislation rather than the Constitution, and a legislative Voice has just as much chance of being elitist as a constitutional one. And second, this passion for localism seems oddly sudden.
