OPINION: An impending byelection in Scott Morrison’s suburban seat of Cook could make or break Peter Dutton’s leadership.

In his first press conference as opposition leader, Peter Dutton said big business, with its ever-growing focus on environmental, social and governance protocols, was no longer the natural ally of the Liberal Party.

Do not underestimate the impact of voter discontent with Liberal candidate Roshena Campbell, who does not live in the seat and was destroyed by Labor’s ground and social media campaign as the barrister from Brunswick. “Aston lances the delusion the party can abandon urban electorates because electoral fortunes all reside in the outer suburbs,”, both of whom lost their once blue-ribbon seats to teals in 2022.

There still would have been a domestic political dividend because the Greens would be attacking Labor for dealing with the devil and selling out the planet. No signs of shifting on policy or philosophy. It’s not about going right or left but sticking to Liberal principles on the economy and industrial relations while recognising the mainstream also cares about climate change, fairness and other progressive issues.

He said the feeling is Peter Dutton is still the “most credible option” as Opposition leader. “Labor made it a referendum about Peter Dutton – we saw that in their campaign material, and the voters spoke, and they spoke against Peter Dutton,” Mr Clennell said. “The Libs are in real trouble.”
