The Coalition would raise the minimum age a person can join social media from 13 to 16 within “the first 100 days of government”, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said.

“I would put it at the top of my list for the first 100 days in government, so within the first three months we would introduce it,” he said. “It just gives parents more power in the equation and there is a lot of pressure because there are plenty of examples as well of kids being isolated from their friendship groups, not being able to communicate,” Mr Dutton said, adding his recognition of social media’s benefit during periods like the pandemic.
By upping the law to 16, Mr Dutton argues, it helps parents enforce boundaries for their children with social media. Polling by Dynata that surveyed more than 3,000 social media users - including teenagers – in April found 70 per cent of teenagers had a negative experience on social media while one in three teenagers had been exposed to disturbing or traumatic content.Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said the trial was"to make sure that we've got the age settings right and that the technology supports that".
