Duterte wishes Shinzo Abe a speedy recovery
President Duterte regrets the resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, saying he will not forget his “brother’s” kindness and strength of character.Duterte said in a presidential message released Saturday afternoon that he wishes the speedy recovery of the Japanese leader.“He is — to me and the Filipino people — a true friend closer than a brother. To Prime Minister Abe, I pray for your speedy and full recovery!” he added.
Duterte described Abe as a leader who was truly determined to do what is best for his country and his neighboring countries, particularly the Philippines. “Through many years of our engagement, I have seen a leader with a bold vision and firm determination to do what was best for his country and our region,” he said.
“The bilateral relations between the Philippines and Japan, now a Strategic Partnership, greatly flourished during his tenure,” he added. The 65-year-old Abe announced his resignation Friday, saying he cannot serve the Japanese people when his health condition hinders him from making political decisions that will benefit his country.
