The Centers for Disease Control of the United States describes fentanyl as 'a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

' In 2016, Duterte said that he had used fentanyl in the past to ease pain caused by spinal injuries from a motorbike accident but has not acknowledged ongoing use of the drug.
