AMSTERDAM - The Dutch national railway NS said in a statement on Wednesday it would offer financial compensation to survivors and families of Holocaust victims who were transported via Dutch rail to Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The railway, which is owned by the government, announced the decision at a ceremony in Utrecht. The NS said it had reserved “several tens of millions of euros” for payments to affected people, including Jews and other minority groups targeted by the Nazi regime.
An estimated 100,000 Dutch Jews - or 70% of the pre-war total - were deported and murdered in Nazi concentration camps.
