Rabbi Shmuel Raichik, who prayed with inmates at Terminal Island the week prior for Rosh Hashanah, said that the “beginning of rehabilitation for prisoners is productivity.” In Judaism, there’s a call to “bring people back into society, not locking them up,” but meeting them “where they are.” Isser Brikman, a rabbi-in-training who prayed at Terminal Island with Raichik, said that he will never forget the deep reverence the inmates have for the holiday. Many of them were reformed Jews wanting to express their faith, while others just wanted to learn. In a classroom-converted-chapel, they said words of encouragement to one another, participating in the services, and praying for strength for what each person in the room was going through.
