Having caught more than 15 black mamba in December alone, a Durban snack rescuer says this is his busiest mamba summer yet. | WitnessKZN
Snake catcher and conservationist Nick Evans has been kept busy this summer, especially by black mamba all over Durban.
Recounting one of his most recent and most difficult rescues, Evans said he had been trying to catch two black mambas living in a garden refuse pile, at a complex in Queensburgh. “Also, one couldn’t walk on it. You take a step there, and you’ll fall straight through. It was an absolute nightmare. It was going to take some luck.”Evans said the mambas were very happy there because it was safe shelter with nice sun-tanning spots, and a dassie colony to feed on.
“I had to make do with one. Eventually, I managed. It was far from smooth. But at least it was safe, and was released into an area away from people. The residents were relieved too. The other one hadn’t been seen in the two days prior to this catch, and hasn’t been seen since. I guess they hung around together after mating season, making the most of this perfect hideout.
