'Monsternomicon' is true to the game, silly and sometimes lethal — just like the big spring movie 'Honor Among Thieves'
When they started talking about"Monsternomicon," they put together a wish list of gifted improvisers that they knew and thought would be a good fit.
Each installment tells a stand-alone story, with core characters returning show after show. It's pretty easy to follow, even for those with little or no knowledge of the game that inspired it. A group of non-player characters help fill out the story, playing all sorts of roles with the help of a box of props just offstage and their own quick wits.
The March show included a roughly two-minute scene between two dwarves that Grubbs and data analyst Louie Arnette, 27, created in the moment. The characters were friends, and as they prepared for the kill-or-be-killed moment, they talked through their issues. When the scene ended with the inevitable death of one of the them, there was a collective wail from the audience.
