Dune: Awakening Console Release Brings Enhanced Single-Player Experience

Funcom's Dune: Awakening is set to launch on consoles on September 22, 2026, featuring a new single-player campaign, revamped endgame mechanics, and full PS5 optimization, while also offering a physical release despite industry trends.

With the upcoming release of Dune: Part Three in December, Denis Villeneuve's epic adaptation of Frank Herbert's iconic sci-fi series is finally coming to a close.

While the franchise will continue expanding with HBO's hit Dune: Prophecy series later this year as well, fans are eagerly awaiting word on any additional projects from the IP beyond what's currently in the works, such as a new series, film, or even a new game covering Herbert's beloved Children of Dune era. However, perhaps one of the most underrated new adaptations of Herbert's work comes by way of Funcom's survival adventure, Dune: Awakening, which first released on PC last year to critical acclaim.

And luckily, millions of Dune fans are going to be able to experience a massively improved and reimagined adventure this year, as Dune: Awakening is officially getting an overhauled release on console on September 22, 2026 (via PS Blog). Despite a somewhat underwhelming endgame experience that has admittedly improved substantially since launch, Dune: Awakening has garnered a dedicated and active player-base that's only set to grow as the game hits consoles later this summer.

While the PC version is a multiplayer-only experience, the console release will introduce a new and improved single-player action survival experience that PC gamers have been requesting since launch. According to a recent PlayStation blog post, the single-player console experience addresses one of the biggest gripes in the game, completely revamping the endgame experience: multiplayer, the endgame in Dune: Awakening is built around players competing over specific objectives to make sure their faction - House Atreides or House Harkonnen - gains control over the Landsraad.

Controlling the Landsraad gives them the ability to make decisions that can impact gameplay for everyone across the server. In single-player, instead of removing or downscaling this part of the game, we're instead simulating other players competing for these objectives, making sure it's still a compelling and engrossing part of the experience.

The single-player rollout on console will also introduce several new gameplay customization options and will be fully optimized for the PS5, allowing players to scale difficulty as they see fit. PlayStation gamers can expect the following performance specs: Further, despite recent upsetting news regarding Sony's decision to do away with physical media, Dune: Awakening will be getting a physical release in retail worldwide.

Overall, if you're on the fence about diving into the game based on existing reviews for PC or are unsure because survival games aren't your bag, you may want to rethink the console version of Dune: Awakening when it releases this September
