Dundee Township Park District’s Sleepy Hollow swimming pool lost a staggering 3.8 million gallons of water this past summer due to leaks, but they don't have $20 million to repair it or build a new pool.

The Dundee Township Park Board is debating the future of the swimming pool in Sleepy Hollow, which is in deteriorating condition after more than 60 years of use and lost 3.8 million gallons of water this summer due to leaks.

“It takes a lot of patching to get this up and going ,” he said. “We have a lot of challenges and they’ve exponentially gotten worse over the last several years.”Board members decided last spring to keep the pool open for the 2024 season provided the integrity of its shell remained in usable condition. That hasn’t been the case; the pool is crumbling and its water loss is huge, Peterson said.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the monies to just be able to replace this pool. We can’t use the existing shell. We’d have to start all over.” “Why has a Band-Aid been continually put on this when it should’ve been fixed a long time ago?” Thomas asked. Sleepy Hollow pool was built in the late 1950s or early 1960s as part of a privately owned country club. The district purchased both for $120,000 in 1972 and altered its L-shaped configuration to create a zero-depth pool in 1986, , Peterson said.

Generations of families, including Peterson’s, have been regulars at the pool over its 60-plus year history, he said. He learned to swim at the pool as a child and worked there early in his career. It remains a community pool to a new generation, although it is open to all Dundee Township residents and guests.
