The WSP is investigating three back-to-back wrong-way crashes in Pierce County early Sunday morning involving drivers suspected of being impaired.

A photo of Washington State Patrol troopers at the scene of one of three wrong-way crashes that occurred in Pierce County on June 2, 2024. The first happened around 2 a.m. on SR 12 near Canyon Road and 31st Street. A woman driving with a 19-month-old baby was going the wrong way and crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing two men in the other vehicle and injuring a third man.

The 23-year-old female driver in the fatal crash is still hospitalized at Tacoma General but will face charges for vehicular homicide and DUI once she’s discharged. The 19-month-old baby in her vehicle was also taken to the hospital but survived the crash. Then, around 4:30 a.m., another wrong-way driver on I-705 just north of I-5 was seriously injured in another crash, along with the passenger of the other vehicle who was hit while checking on the injured impaired driver.

According to court documents, Moreno admitted to having a total of five beers before the crash. Troopers on the scene also reported, “Moreno’s eyes were watery and bloodshot, the odor of intoxicants billowed from his person.”
