The Ducks’ leading scorer, benched after an outburst and penalty in Wednesday’s loss, knows his emotions affect the team and aims to find the right balance

| UPDATED:ANAHEIM — Project Trevor Zegras, one of the foundational pieces in the Ducks’ ambitious rebuilding program, remains a distinct work in progress.

“But he thought I was yelling at him,” said Zegras, who acknowledged he needs to work on developing a better relationship with NHL referees and linesmen going forward. Zegras might not lead the Ducks in penalty minutes, but he’s giving the two players ahead of him, Max Comtois and Sam Carrick, a decent run.

Zegras wasn’t the only player singled out. Eakins also sat Mason McTavish, Comtois and Brett Leason for a big chunk of the latter half of the first period against the Capitals. Not only as a message being sent to the individuals but also to the group as a whole, Eakins said. “Most of the time when I play, I don’t think about much,” he said. “I have a tough time while I’m on the ice taking a breath and thinking about what I’m doing. Which is something I’m constantly working on. Dallas has been really good with it. It’s just happened too many times where I’ve freaked out and taken it out on the refs.
