The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supports the passage of the International Maritime Trade Competitiveness Act to address the issue of “exorbitant” international shipping charges that have been weighing down Filipino importers and exporters.

The Department of Trade and Industry supports the passage of the International Maritime Trade Competitiveness Act to address the issue of “exorbitant” international shipping charges that have been weighing down Filipino importers and exporters.

Acknowleding the concerns of exporters, importers, and logistics service providers affected by “unreasonable” charges imposed by some international shipping lines, the Trade chief said reducing shipping charges could “significantly boost” the country’s economic growth. To address this, the DTI said it is “advocating for the passage of the International Maritime Trade Competitiveness Act, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for the maritime industry and protect businesses from unfair practices.”

According to a study conducted by BlueFocus Infrastrucutre Advisors , a transport and logistics service provider based in Spain, shipping rates are costlier in the Philippines than in neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. Corralo said the study gathered trade data and logistics costs from public sources, spot quotations with Filipino and global logistics providers and interviews with local stakeholders.
