Police arrested an intoxicated Oberlin man Jan. 30 after he nearly caused a vehicle crash and then passed a stopped school bus.
Published: Feb. 05, 2026, 11:16 a.m. BEREA , Ohio – An intoxicated Oberlin man, 41, was arrested at about 3 p.m. Jan. 30 after he nearly caused a vehicle crash and then passed a stopped school bus. Police saw the man driving a Chevrolet Impala on Ohio 237 northbound.
He turned westbound onto Sheldon Road in front of a pickup truck heading southbound. The truck’s driver braked hard to avoid a collision. Police started following the Impala with the intent to pull it over. The man drove over the 25-mph speed limit on Sheldon. A school bus pulled in front of the man’s car. The bus stopped and activated its warning lights to drop off a child. The man drove left of center around the school bus. Police pulled over the Impala after it had turned onto Grayton Road. They asked the man if he was in a hurry. He said, “Yes, I am trying to get to my girlfriend’s work.” The man was not carrying a driver’s license. When police asked him for identification, he handed them his wallet. Police returned the wallet and again asked him to find ID. He tried but was unable to do so. The man became upset with himself. His speech was slurred. Police noticed open containers of alcohol in the car’s backseat. Police identified the man through his Social Security number. During field sobriety tests, which he failed, they smelled alcohol on him. Police placed the man in handcuffs. On the drive to jail, he argued with police. He said, “You better not take these cuffs off me, I promise you.”
