Closing Atlantic City’s needle exchange would come at a perilous time in the state’s battle against opioid addiction and communicable diseases
Some of Oasis’ neighbors along South Tennessee Avenue have already been shut down or relocated.
“Atlantic City’s not the only place where people take up drugs,” Council Member Kaleem Shabazz, who co-sponsored the ordinance with Tibbitt, said in an interview. “Fairness says that Atlantic City should not be the only location in Atlantic County to have a needle exchange.”Executives at the South Jersey AIDS Alliance claim the council’s recent move to push them from the city caught them completely flat-footed, blaming Tibbitt, the city council president, for squashing negotiations.
In interviews, SJAA officials repeatedly emphasized that they’d have been fine with moving from their current location, so long as it were a brick-and-mortar location within the city that serves both their clients and their staff. Moving to a building near the shelter and outpatient recovery center seemed like a workable fit. The proposed location is closer to the city’s transit center, which would make it easier to connect individuals with inpatient drug treatment programs on the mainland.
Once Tibbit made his announcement, Harney claims she stopped hearing from Jingoli or her contacts at the CRDA about the application.
