The Matheson Third District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City was evacuated after reports of a suspicious package outside on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The Washington Federal Building at 405 South Main Street was also evacuated.
Deputies have made an arrest in relation to a suspicious package that forced the evacuation of the Matheson Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.According to court records, deputies with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office were notified about the suspicious package Tuesday afternoon. The package was found on the north side of the courthouse complex, about halfway between State Street and Main Street on 400 North.Members of the Salt Lake City Police Department bomb squad were called to the scene to investigate.Officers closed 400 South while bomb squad members worked.
According to deputies, once they found Bentrum, they could detect the smell of marijuana from a black bag on his bicycle.Officials said they found just under 6 pounds of marijuana and 5 THC cartridges.Bentrum was on parole with the Colorado Department of Corrections and had an extradition warrant out for his arrest.
